Marquee Nightclub Review

It wasn’t long ago that Vegas popped out new nightclubs faster than Octomom did children. With clubs opening every other week they didn’t need to stand out from the crowd to be successful.

Nowadays, though, it takes a little more ingenuity.

So when the folks at Tao Group set out to add another nightclub to its already impressive stable (Tao and Lavo) they knew it was going to have to stand on its own legs. A few years and $60 million later, comes Marquee at the newly-opened Cosmopolitan. And if Tao and Lavo are any example, Marquee should have no problem living up to its name.

While its sister nightclubs have made a living off of being culturally themed with attached fine-dining restaurants, Marquee puts the emphasis back on the music that made nightclubs to begin with. With three different rooms and three different musical genres played in each of them, the impact will be obvious.

But this much is clear: Marquee is more than just music.

Once you get through the masses and up the elevator to the 17th floor, you are immediately greeted with a bar. By this time you’ve probably lost someone in your group so remember this spot when you want to come back together.

At other nightclubs you might feel the urge to game plan your night, but at Marquee you should fight that feeling. With three distinct rooms and an attached day club with outdoor gaming, your night could be limited by imposing a game plan.

OK, back to the bar. From here you have a choice: Go left into the main area of the club where the 40-foot LED screen will surely entice you or go right to the Boom Box room.

This is where your musical senses (or curiosity) can take over. The music in the main room will almost always be house music, while Boom Box will mostly be Hip-Hop. And since you plan on spending more than a few minutes at Marquee we recommend you go wherever your heart (or eyes) takes you.

If you choose the Boom Box, odds are you’ll think of Lavo as soon as you walk in. The dark tones in the room and faux-crocodile skin flooring make for a close resemblance to the popular spot at the Palazzo. But the smallness of the room, lack of a dedicated dance floor and interesting silhouette paintings on the wall make this room stand on its own.

When you do make it to the main room you’ll be inundated with a number of booths, both around the dance floor and near the walkway. If you haven’t sprung for a booth, odds are, right about now you’re going to start to feel jealousy coming on. The spacious leather booths are inviting and give guests the rare chance to sit down in the club.

But, on the bright side, this is a club so who really sits down anyway?

The sea of bodies near the DJ is the dance floor. And thanks to the oversized LED screen and high-tech sound system, this is definitely the center of the party. Each of the impressive resident DJs has their own electronic signature on the screen, while go-go dancers shake on the catwalks above.

The sound system is loud enough for everyone to hear the music, but stays at the right decibel level to pick up that conversation with the hottie dancing with you without screaming in their ear.

Outside of the main room is the day club. There are two large pools along with cabanas that feature their own private plunge pool. To the right is outdoor gaming and beyond that (if you’re lucky enough to get one) are private three-story bungalows with rooftop pools.

By this time you may already be exhausted, but there’s still more to Marquee.

The Library is almost a secret room that you have to venture upstairs and behind the LED screen to get to. With hundreds of Vegas-centric books stacked around the room it resembles a library — well if your library had a billiards table and a bar.

All this information doesn’t even include the day club that will likely be the talk of the town when the warm weather comes rolling back in.

In order to live up to a name like Marquee, the folks at Tao Group were going to have to outdo their own nightclubs along with the hordes of Vegas’ other clubs. And although we’ve had the chance to walk through the club we still don’t think we’ve seen everything Marquee has to offer.

The Bank Review

A name like “The Bank” sets a certain level of expectation. The Bellagio’s nightclub offering begins with an escalator ride up and walk through an intimate foyer area, as if to not overwhelm you with sheer opulence up front. This also acts as a way of keeping the crowding to a minimum outside the club, but on busy weekend nights there can still be line of partygoers stretching out into the Bellagio.

As the 6,600-square-foot club opens up, you see it’s a two-level affair, with bars at each end and tiered VIP seating on the ground floor, keeping VIPs a bit secluded but still part of the action. The second level overlooks the DJ booth and is just wide enough to give some room to dance or just watch the action below.

Everything at The Bank symbolizes elegance. You’ve got an onyx-colored ceiling with clear gems dangling from above, refracting the various colored lights of the night. There are gold accents throughout, including much of the railing on the second level, and a pattern of crisscrossing rectangles that seem to recur throughout the club.

Even the bottle service oozes class. The alcohol is delivered by two hosts in a giant, glowing, blue diamond, lifted overhead as if it were the throne of royalty. Well, it might not be a real diamond but at least it’s diamond-shaped.

The vibe here is dress-to-impress. Sure, with a wide variety of music spun by the DJs and guest performers, you’ve got people from all sorts of “scenes” drawn to The Bank, from the hipsters to the clubaholics. But even though you’ve got every kind of crowd here, everyone is dressed in their most crisp shirts and best dresses, looking sharp and keeping it classy.

Hooters’ creditor presses for quick sale or foreclosure

Neither side is backing down in the Hooters Las Vegas casino resort bankruptcy case, with Hooters’ main creditor asserting again Wednesday it should be allowed to foreclose on and sell the property.

Since Hooters filed for bankruptcy protection on Aug. 1 to block a foreclosure planned by Canpartners Realty Holding Co. IV, it’s been fending off efforts by Canpartners to quickly close the bankruptcy case so Canpartners can foreclose.

For instance, Canpartners early on unsuccessfully tried to prevent Hooters from spending money to market itself to potential investors.

Canpartners, a unit of investment company Canyon Capital Realty Advisors of Los Angeles, says Hooters is so far underwater on its mortgage that its reorganization efforts are hopeless and a waste of time and money.

Canpartners holds more than 97 percent of the 696-room property’s $181 million in face value debt and says the Tropicana Avenue resort is worth only about $75 million.

But Hooters and its attorneys are portraying Canpartners as an opportunistic debt investor, saying it picked up $127.5 million of the debt for just 22 cents on the dollar.

“Debtor’s largest creditor, Canpartners, has engaged in abusive tactics to derail these Chapter 11 cases,’’ Hooters’ attorneys at the Las Vegas law firm Gordon Silver charged in an Oct. 28 request to Las Vegas Bankruptcy Judge Bruce Markell that Hooters’ exclusive period to propose a plan of reorganization be extended past its Nov. 29 deadline.

By extending the exclusivity period, Hooters would buy more time to find investors and maintain control of the bankruptcy case as Canpartners couldn’t propose its own reorganization plan until the next proposed deadline of Jan. 28.

Canpartners’ attorneys fired back on Wednesday, asking Markell to terminate Hooters’ exclusivity period on Nov. 29 so Canpartners can propose its own plan.

“This is the `textbook’ case for terminating the exclusive periods for a variety of reasons,’’ Canpartners said in its motion, charging the existing Hooters investors are looking for more investors as opposed to marketing the property for sale solely so they can avoid personal tax liabilities.

“Despite their fiduciary obligations to maximize recoveries for creditors, debtors appear to have no interest in considering a sale, despite that a sale of the property is the best (and only) way to maximize value (for the bankruptcy estate),’’ Canpartners said in its filing.

Canpartners also complained that Hooters has failed to make interest payments on its secured notes since October 2008, it’s now some $35.5 million behind on those payments and this amount is growing at the rate of $947,000 per month.

The Canpartners plan calls for Hooters assets to be sold through a foreclosure or auction process in which Canpartners would be able to credit bid.

With a credit bid, Canpartners could gain ownership of Hooters by exchanging its debt for equity and then hold on to the property until it finds a buyer at a price it’s willing to sell the resort for.

Canpartners said its proposed plan would result in immediate payments in full of about $1 million to unsecured creditors, who otherwise face “little to no recovery’’ under any debt-elimination plan Hooters could propose.

“Debtors simply don’t need any more time. Debtors began their restructuring efforts more than three years ago. They have already spent more than $3 million on those restructuring efforts. These efforts have been abject failures and have eroded value to creditors. Debtors neither need nor deserve additional time to continue down this same path,’’ Canpartners attorneys at the Los Angeles law firm Loeb & Loeb LLP said in their filing.

Canpartners submitted with its filing an affidavit from John Knott, a well-known hotel-casino broker at CB Richard Ellis.

He said Hooters had engaged CB Richard Ellis to sell the property in 2009 but the desired price was “unrealistic’’ and that current efforts by Hooters contractor Innovation Capital LLC to find investors are “unlikely to succeed’’ because the Hooters investors insist on keeping an ownership stake to avoid tax problems.

“It is very unlikely that debtors will be able to find a funding partner that will enable them to complete the $40-$50 million in renovations necessary to reposition the property, service the debtor’s debt and otherwise restructure the debtors’ affairs,’’ Knott said in his declaration. “It is even more unlikely that this funding partner would permit existing equity (holders) to retain any equity in the debtors going forward, particularly if existing equity (holders) were unwilling to contribute any of their own capital.

“Without a court-mandated reduction in the principal amount of the outstanding debt, the debtor has no chance to bring capital to the property as the principal amount of the debt clearly exceeds the market value of the asset,’’ Knott said in his declaration.

Hooters, however, has said Innovation Capital has recently sent information to more than 200 potential investors and as of last week, 22 potential investors had signed confidentiality agreements and received a presentation on the investment opportunity.

Markell plans a Nov. 29 hearing on the competing requests on whether to extend or terminate Hooters’ exclusivity period.

State regulators recommend partnership to control Palms hotel-casino

The state Gaming Control Board today recommended the licensing of a private equity partnership as the controlling interest of the Palms hotel-casino.

Representatives of FP Holdings LP, a partnership between TPG Capital, formerly known as Texas Pacific Group, and Los Angeles-based Leonard Green & Partners LP, said the face of the property, George Maloof, would continue to manage the 10-year-old property and the adjacent Palms Place condominium development

The new owners will continue to staff the property with existing employees and is investing $30 million for various improvements.

The licensing recommendation, unanimously approved by the three-member board, will be considered Nov. 17 by the Nevada Gaming Commission.

Fort Worth, Texas-based TPG is familiar to gaming regulators as one of the partners that in 2007 acquired Harrah’s Entertainment, now Caesars Entertainment, and is invested in Station Casino’s Aliante property.

Leonard Green, which manages $9 billion in equity capital mostly in public pension funds, also sailed through the board’s licensing process with a clean record.

Mike Connelly, a Leonard Green partner, told the board the company has acquired $60 million in new financing from Wells Fargo Bank to retire debt on Palms Place, which opened just after the recession took hold in 2008, and to refurbish rooms, restaurants and the casino.

Maloof, who has a 1.98 percent stake in the company and whose family collectively has 8.75 percent, spoke briefly to regulators, mostly thanking the resort’s employees, 600 of which are still with the company since the property opened Nov. 15, 2001.

The owners also hired Joseph Magliarditi, who formerly headed the rival Hard Rock Hotel, as president of the property.

“I can’t say enough about the Palms brand, particularly as a former competitor,” Magliarditi told the board. “We’re looking to reinvigorate that brand through intelligent marketing and capital investment and expanding our outreach in outside markets.”

Magliarditi said the new capital would be used to freshen the property’s nightlife offerings and upgrade more than 200 of the casino’s slot machines. He noted that the Ghostbar Day Club, which opened last month, is enjoying success in its bid to bring summer pool parties indoors.

In other business, the board conditionally recommended allowing Ronald Johnson to operate the Las Vegas Hilton as a court-appointed receiver. A Clark County District Court judge has not issued a ruling on whether Johnson would be appointed receiver of the property, but Colony Resorts made the request in anticipation of the move.

The board also recommended licensing for three executives of Las Vegas-based Shuffle Master as officer, directors and key employees of the company. Recommended for licensing were , CEO Michael Isaacs, chief financial officer Linster Fox and chairman Garry Saunders.

The board also recommended approval of a one-day license for owners of the site that formerly housed the Castaways. Local ordinances require gaming to be conducted at least once every two years on land zoned for casinos so a small temporary casino will be operated at the Boulder Highway location on Dec. 15.
